It is quite common to feel some discomfort after a treatment. Most of the time people feel better but it’s not unusual to feel a bit worse or have a new pain or discomfort in a different area.

Most adverse reactions are:

  • Short lived
    • Peak within a few days and then …
      • Settle within the week after treatment.

It’s important to recognise these reactions to help you manage appropriately. You will have been warned about treatment reactions but to recap here are some of the patient-reported and mostly short-lived reactions to treatment :

  • Fatigue
  • Tenderness
  • New Aches in different areas
  • Headache
  • Possible feeling worse in the area
  • Flu like symptoms
  • Pain has not gone away

Treatment reactions occur because the body is adjusting to the treatment. The application of the manual therapy and adjustments (manipulations, mobilisations etc) can stimulate as well as calm the body and this can lead to the above discomfort while the body begins to recover.

Do monitor how you feel and allow yourself rest and be easy on yourself. If you need advice or you feel things are not improving please do get in touch for further guidance and advice.
